The top-ranked Texas Longhorns entered the game unbeaten and untied for the first time since in 45 years. The Navy team they were playing would be the second No.1 versus No.2 test for Texas on the Cotton Bowl field that season. In October, they upset the then top-ranked Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 28-7 in Dallas.<p>The Midshipmen, however, had Heisman-winning junior quarterback Roger Staubach. Dallas had not served to be a friendly place for Navy. Earlier in the season, their only regular season loss came there on the same field, a 32-28 loss to SMU.
