Before 1980, Georgia finished in the Top 3 of the final AP poll only twice. They finished the 1942 season as #2 and were #3 in 1946. Coincidentally, those were also the only two years that UGA had a consensus All-America running back in Heisman winner Frank Sinkwich and Heisman runner-up Charlie Trippi, respectively. Almost three and a half decades go by before Herschel Walker comes along and Georgia climbs all the way to the top of the heap. With Walker rushing for a NCAA freshman record 1,616 yards, the Bulldogs went undefeated, untied and clinched their first national title with a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame at the Sugar Bowl.
